 descriptionKoyasan is a region that hosts an active monastic center founded twelve centuries ago by the priest Kukai (posthumously known as Kobo Daishi) for the study and practice of esoteric Buddhism. It is the headquarters of the Koyasan sect Shingon Buddhism, a faith widely throughout Japan. Located in a small plain at the top of Mount Koya is the sacred place known as the Danjo Garan, a complex of temples, halls, pagodas and Buddhist statues that welcome visitors to this place serene and holy. Surrounded by a thick cedar forest massifs, the area of Okuno-in, or the inner sanctum, is the scene of a vast cemetery which contains the tombs of many famous Japanese, including the head of Hideyoshi Toyotomi samurai (or Taiko Hideyoshi) and memorials dedicated to the spirits of soldiers killed in the Pacific War. Since 2004, UNESCO declared Koyasan and "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range" on its World Heritage List. In winter, the peninsula becomes a unique landscape.

 contentDepuis le 12e siècle se déroule le festival on-matsuri. Celui-ci fut pour la première fois organisé lors d'une épidémie afin de prier pour l'éradication du fléau et pour la bénédiction de récoltes fructueuses. Ce festival historique est encore de nos jours l'un des principaux festivals de la préfecture de Nara, attirant de nombreuses personnes. Le On-matsuri dure 4 jours, mais les plus beaux événements ont lieu le 17 décembre. C'est l'occasion unique d'assister à des représentations de kagura, la musique dédiée aux dieux, ou de bugaku, une musique de cour accompagnée de danses traditionnelles. Ces spectacles, et bien d'autres, sont rarement visibles de nos jours et le festival réjouira sûrement les personnes intéressées aux arts du spectacle et à la musique traditionnels.

Des moines courent sur les coursives du Nigatsu-do en agitant de gigantesques torches au-dessus de la foule. Suivant la coutume, recevoir des braises sur soi protège des êtres et évènements maléfiques. La cérémonie de Omizutori proprement dite se déroule dans la nuit du 12 au 13 mars (plus exactement à 2h00 du matin). Les moines vont en procession puiser de l'eau dans un puits au pied du temple, sensée ne jaillir qu'une fois par an, puis en font offrande à Kannon, puis au public. Cette eau est réputée pour avoir des vertus curatives contre les maladies. On dit qu'elle parvient au temple après avoir circulé 10 jours sous la ville de Obama dans la préfecture de Fukui. D'ailleurs, le 2 mars a lieu la cérémonie de Omizuokuri dans le temple de Jingu-ji pour assister au départ de l'eau sacrée. Durant l'offrande, l'eau qui a été puisée est versée dans deux récipients, l'un contenant de l'eau de l'année précédente et l'autre l'eau mélangée de toutes les cérémonies depuis leur origine il y a plus de 1200 ans !

- meta_description_for_layoutKoyasan is a region that hosts an active monastic center founded twelve centuries ago by the priest Kukai (posthumously known as Kobo Daishi) for the study and practice of esoteric Buddhism. It is the headquarters of the Koyasan sect Shingon Buddhism, a faith widely throughout Japan. Located in a small plain at the top of Mount Koya is the sacred place known as the Danjo Garan, a complex of temples, halls, pagodas and Buddhist statues that welcome visitors to this place serene and holy. Surrounded by a thick cedar forest massifs, the area of Okuno-in, or the inner sanctum, is the scene of a vast cemetery which contains the tombs of many famous Japanese, including the head of Hideyoshi Toyotomi samurai (or Taiko Hideyoshi) and memorials dedicated to the spirits of soldiers killed in the Pacific War. Since 2004, UNESCO declared Koyasan and "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range" on its World Heritage List. In winter, the peninsula becomes a unique landscape.
