Designed by Anthony Russell, Shompole is recognized as one of Africa’s leading safari destinations; particularly for its unusual design and location. The lodge sits on the edge of the dramatic Nguruman Escarpment overlooking the vast expanse of the Great Rift Valley, and further south into Tanzania. Its location, on 140,000 acres of the Shompole Group Ranch means that it is in an area where both culture and wildlife combine to offer an unforgettable safari experience. Shompole is constructed to blend in to its rugged surroundings but create an oasis of calm within the hot and harsh environment. Anthony Russell has used naturally occurring white quartz stone, pale thatch and fig-wood; using water as a prime feature. Each of the enormous tented rooms provides a very spacious, shady oasis in this arid environment. With privacy, comfort and relaxation in mind, each room has its own cool pool and informal sitting areas, a bathroom with a view and a specially designed bedroom tent with a high canopied roof. The diversity and variety of landscape on the Shompole Group Ranch allows for a great range of activities from early morning and evening walks, day and night game drives, bush breakfasts and sundowner excursions to the enchanting fig forest. The experience and skill of Maasai guides and trackers play an important part in the safari experience on offer; they are familiar and knowledgeable about the bird and animal life in the area, which includes lion, leopard, cheetah, aardworlf, civet car, bat-eared fox, serval cat, regular sightings of wild dog, striped & spotted hyena, eland, zebra, oryx and giraffe, amongst others. We recommend that the wildlife experience be combined with finding out more about the Maasai people in this area; visiting the local market and villages, and taking part in any festivities or celebrations that may be taking place. Activities are unscheduled and organized according to the preferences of out guests where possible. There is also, of course, ample time to relax and enjoy the facilities of the camp itself. Shompole is founded upon four principles: conservation, community, capacity building and commerce. These 4 C’s are the watchwords of the project, which aims to create a self-sustaining tourist operation, which will in turn allow the local community the opportunity to improve their standard of living and learn new skills. Private investment and donations contribute to the establishment of micro-finance projects, education and healthcare facilities amongst others. Beading projects employ Masai women on the Group Ranch, and these have already attracted interest from international designers and publications, whilst, more importantantly empowering the women and providing them with an income of their own to care for their children and elevate their standing in the community.
